TOUGH-TACKLING defender who signed from Charlton in a £2.5m deal following his former club's relegation from the Premier League.
The talented right-back arrived at the club having missed much of the pre-season schedule.
Despite making some good fitness progress, it was not until the home derby with Newcastle United that the 27-year-old made his first team debut.
Indeed, he nearly enjoyed a dream start in the very next game but had a late shot scrambled off the line by the Birmingham City defence during a 2-0 Boro win.
Brought in to replace the departed Stuart Parnaby, Young brings in the kind of quality experience that Gareth Southgate has been searching for.
He won a League Cup winners' medal with Spurs before joining Charlton for £4m in 2001 and making more than 200 appearances for the club.
He has also won seven England caps, finishing on the winning side for his country six times.
A tough-tackling player who loves to get forward on the overlap, the six-footer can also provided cover at centre-back..
His consistent form led to him being given the skipper's armband at Charlton, where he also won Player of the Year awards.
Scored his first goal in Boro colours on November 3 2007, a right-footed screamer from the left-hand edge of the penalty area against his first club, Tottenham.
His performances during his debut season at the Riverside brought backing from Gareth Southgate for Luke to be given an England recall.
