AN England U21 international, Ross has all the attributes for a top class career in the game.

Tall and strong, Ross hails from Newton Aycliffe and has been with the club since he was a schoolboy.

Kept goal for Boro when they reached the 2002-03 FA Youth Cup final where they were beaten by Manchester United over two legs.

Early in the 2003-04 season Ross made his league debut for Darlington, impressing and keeping a clean sheet before his one-month loan spell was prematurely ended by an international call-up.

Later in the season he went on loan to Barnsley and got further league experience as he covered for injured former Boro goalkeeper Marlon Beresford.

Was also on the bench for the first team four times in 2003-04 in the absence of Mark Schwarzer's regular deputies, Carlo Nash and Brad Jones, also making two appearances for Bradford City when on loan at Valley Parade.

Ross returned to Barnsley for a long-term loan in the 2004-05 season, but was recalled to the Riverside to cover for the Schwarzer who was injured. A loan spell with Crewe Alexandra started the 2005-06 season for him.

His Boro debut came towards the end of that season, a Man of the Match display in a 1-1 draw at Bolton and he kept his place as a team of locally-born players went down to a late penalty at Fulham in the final league game.

He made just one appearance for Boro in the 2006-07 season, playing in a surprise 1-0 defeat at home against Notts County in a Carling Cup game in September 2006.

In 2007/08 he enhanced his reputation after being recalled from a loan spell at Cardiff, helping Boro earn a 1-1 draw at Reading and a 2-1 win at home to league leaders Arsenal while Schwarzer recovered from a broken thumb.

When Schwarzer left to join Fulham in the summer of 2008, Turnbull and Brad Jones contested for the place during the build-up to the 2008-09 season.

Initially Jones won, starting the season with the home game against Tottenham, but when the Australian dislocated a finger in the warm-up before the first away game of the season at Liverpool, Ross took his chance, keeping his place until January 2009 when he was replaced by Jones.

At the end of the season Ross informed the Middlesbrough management that he would not be signing a new contract and was to move on.
