After defeat in the Tees-Wear derby Boro are now only three places and four points away from the relegation zone as they approach the final two games at home to Portsmouth and Manchester City knowing a win in either would see them safe.
The Teessiders have an advantage over their rivals in playing the final two games of the season at home - a luxury no other side in the race to stay up possesses.
Interestingly, Boro are the only side in the bottom six not to play a team in the bottom half in the last couple of games of the campaign.
This weekend's fixtures see Bolton host Sunderland, Spurs visit the Madejski Stadium to play Reading and Birmingham battle it out with Fulham at Craven Cottage.
Wigan Athletic are not mathematically safe either and face a tough trip to Villa Park on Saturday, before closing their season at title-chasing Manchester United.
Having beaten Boro a week gone Saturday, Gary Megson's Bolton look to be hitting form just at the right time after picking up a valuable point against Spurs in the capital last weekend.
With Reading in freefall and possessing the worst goal difference of the sides fighting to stave off relegation, Steve Coppell's men are hoping they can pick up something from this weekend's home game against Tottenham ahead of a trip to the league's whipping boys, Derby County, on the final day.
Birmingham and Fulham have a massive game this weekend as the pair fight it out in a bid to gain an advantage going into the final match of the campaign a week on Sunday.
Defeat for Fulham would almost certainly spell relegation. Roy Hodgson's men could even be confirmed as playing their football in the Championship next season on Saturday if they lose and Reading and Bolton pick up at least a point apiece.
As far as Boro are concerned, they know just one victory in their remaining two games will guarantee survival and it could be conceivable that a mere point would be enough.
But should Boro lose this coming Saturday against Portsmouth at the Riverside, it's possible Gareth Southgate's men could be only one point from the drop-zone.
It's two from six at the bottom and Boro will be fully aware that a win this Saturday would ensure Premier League football for an 11th consecutive season.
