Reading U18s 2 Boro U18s 3
RICHARD SMALLWOOD'S magnificent header sealed an excellent comeback win for Martin Scott's team.
There were two changes to the team that drew the opening game with Spurs. Gary Martin partnered Steve Thompson in attack while Ryan Burton cam in for the injured Josh Walker.
It was the hosts who started the brighter and deservedly took the lead when Gary Fewen's half volley could not be kept out despite goalkeeper Sam Filler's best efforts.
But Boro came out with a more determined attitude in the second half and equalised through James Cronesberry's stunning free-kick. The first year scholar hit an unstoppable shot from the edge of the box straight into the top corner.
Reading took the lead again through Nicholas Bignall but a fantastic one-two from strikers Thompson and Martin gave the latter a clear run on goal. The youngster kept his composure and neatly slotted home.
Both teams went in search of the win in a frantic climax and it was the visitors who were to take all three points back to Teesside as Smallwood found space at the back post to head home Lewis McCardle's perfectly flighted cross.
