FORMER England star John Barnes has teamed up with the makers of Wash and Go shampoo to help a project aiming to provide football facilities in Ethiopia.

The ex-Liverpool winger - pictured here playing for Boro during a testimonial game against Rangers - flew to the town of Lalibela in the African country's Gondar region on a fact-finding mission and to enjoy a kick around with some of the youngsters set to benefit.

He then met local dignitaries and dropped into several micro-enterprises, which are also supported by the project.

The campaign aims to setup more businesses to employ local people, as well as providing a football pitch, seating and showering facilities.

"Rarely have I witnessed such a passion for the beautiful game as I did in Ethiopia," said John. "Score Ethiopia is a superb way to use football to deliver much-needed basic facilities to the Gondar region."

The Score Ethiopia campaign also involved children from across the North East, who designed football strips for a competition linking schools in the UK and Africa.
