MIDDLESBROUGH has been chosen as one of 23 places in the UK to host a Sainsbury's Sport Relief Mile this year - and the organisers want you to take part.

It's the first time Middlesbrough has been chosen for one of the flagship events and your support is needed to show the town can compete with the best in the country.

Event manager Jimmy Wattis said: "This is Middlesbrough's first involvement in the Sport Relief Mile and we aim to make it the experience of a lifetime for all who take part.

"I am grateful for the backing Middlesbrough Football Club are giving to the event. This is another testimony of what a big community club Middlesbrough are and the emphasis it places on supporting the town, its partners and its people.

"We are challenging the people of Middlesbrough and the north in general to support this showcase event.

"We need thousands of participants and spectators to take part on the day and help raise money for worthy causes while helping raise the profile of the town and its people."

Activities at the Sport Mile - which takes place on Sunday March 16 - will begin in Centre Square outside the Town Hall with a mass warm up, combined with entertainment including a live band, stilt walkers, clowns and jugglers.

There will be demonstrations of sports including football, cricket, cycling, archery, Tai chi, roller hockey, climbing wall and tennis.

To add to the whole experience runners can enjoy watching members of the public Bungee jumping from the top of the Transporter Bridge as they reach the halfway point.

"You don't have to be a runner, you can walk or jog come in fancy dress and just come along and join in the fun," said Jimmy.

Cost for adults is £5, under-16s £2, and a family of four (two adults and two children) is £12.

Every participant is presented with a special goody bag at the end of the run.
