BORO legend Brian Clough paid a record £170,000 to bring Durham-born Todd from Sunderland to Derby in February 1971.

There he won two championship medals and established himself as an England international, winning 27 caps and being named PFA Player of the Year in 1975.

He went on to enjoy spells with Everton, Birmingham City, Oxford and Luton, retiring after making almost 750 senior appearances.

Todd was managing Whitley Bay when his old friend Rioch invited him to join Boro as assistant manager.

After succeeding Rioch in the hotseat, he came close to bringing a return to the first division, but Boro lost in the play-offs to Notts County. In June 1991 he surprised Boro fans by resigning, blaming interference from the board.

He spent a spell at Bradford City before renewing his partnership with Rioch at Bolton, who he later managed in his own right, before holding the reigns at Swindon Town and Derby County.
