BORO were newcomers to the top flight, while Leeds were the reigning champions - but it was the Teessiders who triumphed in some style.

The home side started brightly and took the lead after just seven minutes when ex-Leeds man Tommy Wright crossed for Paul Wilkinson to open the scoring.

Two minutes later the shell-shocked Yorkshiremen were two down as the same pair combined, Wilkinson heading home this time.

Wright was in sensational form and joined the scorers himself as he rose to nod home a corner two minutes into the second half to make it 3-0.

On the hour mark Wright wriggled past Gary Speed and fed another former Leeds player, John Hendrie, who fired into the far corner.

French superstar Eric Cantona pulled back a consolation goal for Leeds but it was a case of too little, too late for Howard Wilkinson's men.

Boro: Ironside, Morris, Phillips, Kernaghan, Whyte, Peake, Slaven (Pollock), Falconer, Wilkinson (Mustoe), Wright, Hendrie.
