THREE teams were neck and neck, all battling for promotion to the inaugural Premier League when the last day of the 91-92 season came around.

Derby and Leicester were in contention but Boro were very much the form team, having won four games out of the previous five.

Wolves had little to play for other than pride and when the first half ended goalless, news filtered through to the terraces that Derby were beating Swindon 2-0 - meaning only a win would do.

Things looked bleak for Boro when Wolves took the lead midway through the second half and events took a further turn for the worse when Nicky Mohan was somewhat harshly red-carded for his part in a fracas.

But Boro refused to give up hope and, roared on by their travelling army, Jon Gittens popped up in the box to grab an equaliser for the visitors.

The dramatic turnaround was complete when Jamie Pollock's cross was met by a weak header from Paul Wilkinson which somehow crept into the net.

Boro held on and there were emotional scenes at the final whistle and manage Lennie Lawrence was carried around the pitch by delighted playes and fans.

Boro: Ironside, Fleming, Phillips, Gittens, Mohan, Pollock, Slaven (Payton), Falconer, Wilkinson, Hendrie, Ripley (Peake).
