Boro 2 Luton Town 1, April 20 1995
BORO knew three points would confirm promotion to the Premier League - but this game will be remembered by Boro fans for many more reasons.
On an emotional day bathed in the spring sunshine, Teesside said a fond farewell to Ayresome Park after more than a century of football at the famous old stadium.
Stars of yesteryear including legends like Wilf Mannion and George Hardwick paraded before the game as the atmosphere built up.
When the match began, Neil Cox missed a first-half penalty and it looked like it might be one of those days.
But just before the break, crowd favourite John Hendrie struck to the delight of the 23,903 crowd.
Luton surged back in the second half and grabbed an equaliser through John Taylor.
It was Boro's day though, and a great run and cross from Derek Whyte set up Hendrie for his second goal of the game.
At the final whistle, scenes of euphoria began as fans celebrated promotion to the top flight and the end of an era.
