The scene was Old Trafford, the game the FA Cup semi-final, with Boro expected to take the chance to make a first ever final appearance.
But in what could have been the giant-killing of all time, the Spireites took a two-goal lead and Boro had Vladimir Kinder red-carded.
Some Boro fans left the stadium early, but their team did not give up so easily.
Fabrizio Ravanelli and Craig Hignett dramatically brought Boro back into the game then in extra-time Gianluca Festa gave Bryan Robson's team the lead.
But in the very last minute Chesterfield grabbed an equaliser to earn a replay, which Boro won 3-0.
