THERE'S no doubt about the big talking point in the pre-match build up at the Riverside these days - it's the Boro Brick Road leading up to the iconic Ayresome Park gates.

Hundreds of fans are gathering before every game to look at their own brick or admire the thousands of messages on show from supporters all over the world.

Some just display the name of the holder, others feature witty messages or dedications to lifetime Boro fans who have now passed on.

Scott Sinclair - Watch The Name says one brick, possibly named in honour of a young Boro star of the future.

Ow, Get Off My Brick! Says a cheeky M Dye, while Gary Bennett declares I'm from Middlesbrough me!

Eight-year-old Matthew Bailey, from Yarm, wanted to see the brick his family bought for his grandad, Bob Bailey, from Stockton.

"Grandad has supported Boro ever since he was a young lad so they got it for his birthday," he said.

Derek King, from Redcar ordered a brick for his son Philip King, who now lives in Norwich, and his family.

"It's here somewhere but I haven't found it yet," he said. "I really like what they've done here, it's something that years ago the old club would never have thought about. It's a great idea."

Dick Wardell, from Guisborough, didn't order a brick for the first stage but now he's seen it he wishes he had.

"Now people have seen it I think more will get one. We were too busy getting season tickets and all the rest of it at the time but I'll order one now."

Father and son Lennie and Gary Downs from Fairfield, Stockton, got a brick with their names on and the message Boro is life, life is Boro.

"I think the road is an excellent idea," Lennie said. "It took us about a week to think about what to put - the problem was we couldn't put swearwords in!"

John Morley, from Middlesbrough, bought a brick in memory of his dad, who died 17 years ago.

"He took me to games from the age of about eight and he'd be amazed to see how things are now with the new stadium. It's a real piece of history. The statues of Wilf and George had already become a focal point but this really tops it off."

Brick prices range from £30.95 for a single brick with black lettering to £89.95 for a double brick with gold lettering.
